IPL 2015 CSK vs KXIP: Kings XI Punjab No Match For Super Kings

By on April 26, 2015

Chennai Super Kings 192 (McCullum 66) beat Kings XI Punjab 95 for 9 (Jadeja 3-22, Ashwin 2-10) by 97 runs…

The showers that were forecast didn’t happen but it rained runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted 192-3 after choosing to bat first against Kings XI Punjab, with all the top-order batsmen firing. From then on, their bowlers took over as the MS Dhoni-led side cantered to a huge 97-run win. Chasing a stiff target of 193, the Kings XI innings never really got going and they managed only a poor 95/9.

The CSK bowlers kept pegging Kings XI back with regular wickets but old warhorse Ashish Nehra (1-15) was yet again the standout performer with his ability to keep the batters quiet at the start. Dhoni shuffled his resources well, never allowing the Punjab batsmen to get used to the pace of any particular bowler.

Backed by some splendid fielding, they made life difficult for Punjab. Suresh Raina, who took a sharp chance diving to his left at leg-slip to dismiss David Miller (3) off R Jadeja, was a case in point.

M Vijay (34; 4×4, 1×6), who donned the CSK jersey from 2009 to 2013, did play his part before being caught by D Bravo at mid-wicket off R Ashwin (2-10) in the 10th over of the chase. That pretty much killed Kings XI limited chances in the game.

Earlier, the yellow brigade, which went in with an unchanged side, saw their opening pair Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum going on the offensive from the word go. The duo raised the first 50 in just 4.3 overs before Anureet Singh (1-40) dismissed Smith (26; 3×4, 2×6). That brought Suresh Raina to the crease. He led a charmed life.

At the other end, McCullum looked in imperious touch as he cleared the boundaries with ease. Barring a drop by Johnson at mid-off when he was on 21, McCullum was successful in providing the perfect foundation for his side to go for broke in the later overs.

He raised his 50 off just 32 deliveries, aided by 5 fours and 3 sixes. At the halfway mark, CSK were motoring along at 97 for 1 and finally ended up with a healthy 192 for three.
