IPL 2014 – MI vs RR: Anderson Blitz Takes MI To Play-offs

By on May 26, 2014

Mumbai Indians 195 for 5 in 14.4 overs (Anderson 95*) beat Rajasthan Royals 189 for 4 (Samson 74, Nair 50) by five wickets…

Corey Anderson hit nine fours and six sixes to seal the game for MI.

Corey Anderson scored a swashbuckling unbeaten 95 off 44 balls to help Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets and qualify for the play-offs of IPL 7.

IPL 2014 - MI vs RR: Corey AndersonMI needed to chase down RR’s 189/4 inside 15 overs and they ended with 195 for 5 in 14.4 overs to overtake RR’s net run rate and make the last four.

Anderson was well supported by Ambati Rayudu, who hit 30 off 10 balls as the two shared 81 runs in 31 balls in a partnership that kept MI in the hunt.

MI’s rollicking chase wasn’t without drama towards the end. After 14 overs, MI were 181 for 4, needing nine runs from three balls to qualify.

Faulkner had the responsibility to bowl the 15th over and Anderson took a single of the first ball. With eight needed off two, pressure was on Rayudu to find the fence, preferably a six, which he did.

Needing two from the deciding delivery, Rayudu mistimed Faulkner and while trying to steal a second run off an overthrow, was run out. RR players were ecstatic while Rayudu was in tears.

The scores were tied at 189/5 in 14.3 overs, with MI still short of the required numbers by a whisker.

Aditya Tare came out to bat and although only one more was needed to win, he had to hit a four or a six off the next ball to push MI’s run rate over RR’s. A full toss on the leg side by Faulkner and Tare deposited it over deep backward square leg for six.

Lendl Simmons (12), Michael Hussey (22), Rohit Sharma (16), Kieron Pollard (7) hit out to keep MI up with the asking rate.

Earlier, half-centuries from Sanju Samson (74) and Karun Nair (50) helped RR reach a challenging total on flat Wankhede Stadium track.
