Alankara Silva and Janaka Gunaratne took 3 wickets each as Ruhunu XI beat Leicestershire Foxes by 4 runs in the fifth qualifying match of the Champions League Twenty20 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Chasing a stiff victory target of 161 runs, Leicestershire managed 156/8 in their 20 overs.

Abdul Razzaq, who reached his fifty off 36 balls, top scored for Leicestershire and his 68-run knock came off 46 balls and was studded with 2 sixes and 6 fours.

This was Razzaq’s 8th fifty in T20 cricket.

Gunaratne dismissed Razzaq and Paul Nixon in one over to dent the Leicestershire run chase.

Silva dismissed Leicestershire Foxes stand-in captain Andrew McDonald and Will Jefferson in successive overs.

Silva first had Andrew McDonald stumped by Dinesh Chandimal and in his next over trapped Jefferson plumb in front of the wicket.

McDonald hit 3 fours in his 15-ball 24.

TN Sampath took a superb diving catch to dismiss Leicestershire opener Joshua Cobb off Arosh Janoda.

Earlier, Dinesh Chandimal’s unbeaten 62 and Shalika Karunanayake’s 15-ball 28 powered Ruhunu XI to 160/6.

Karunanayake hit 2 sixes and 2 fours in his knock.

Chandimal, who reached his fifty off 45 balls, hit 2 sixes and 6 fours in his knock that came off 51 balls.

This was Chandimal’s seventh fifty in T20 cricket and it came after Abdul Razzaq dismissed Kushal Perera and Janaka Gunaratne in successive overs.

Razzaq first had Kushal Perera caught by Jigar Naik at fine-leg and in his next over had Gunaratne caught behind by Paul Nixon for his 100th T20 wicket.

Ruhunu XI got off to a bad start as Harry Gurney dismissed Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Udawatte in successive overs.

Gurney first clean bowled Jayasuriya in the second over off a slower delivery and in his next over took an easy return catch to send Ruhunu captain Udawatte back to the pavillion.

The breakthroughs came after Leicestershire stand-in captain Andrew McDonald won the toss and chose to bowl.

Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard misses this game due to injury. He has been replaced by Jigar Naik.

Ruhunu have brought in Alankara Asanka Silva in place of Amal Athulathmudali.
