WELLINGTON (Reuters) – Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid cemented India’s dominant position in the third test against New Zealand, leading them to 170 for one in their second innings at lunch on the third day at the Basin Reserve.

Gambhir, who began play on 28, accelerated in the second hour of Sunday’s first session to be within sight of his second century in successive tests, while Dravid had scored his 57th test half century to extend India’s lead to 352 runs.

Gambhir, who scored 137 in the second innings of the drawn second test in Napier, was on 96 and just four runs short of his sixth test ton. Dravid was on 57 as the tourists sought to bat New Zealand out of the match and series.

India are seeking their first test series win in New Zealand since 1968 and hold a 1-0 lead after winning the first match in Hamilton by 10 wickets.

Zaheer Khan captured five for 65 to bowl New Zealand out for 197 in their first innings on Saturday, a deficit of 182 runs after the tourists had been bowled out for 397 earlier.

Explosive opener Virender Sehwag was the only Indian second-innings wicket to fall when he was caught by first slip Ross Taylor for 12 off a Chris Martin bouncer that brushed his glove late on Saturday.
